Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that’s performed to change the shape of and in many cases, narrow the nose. People can opt for nose surgery for medical or cosmetic purposes. Statistics show that such surgical procedures are becoming increasingly common in the United Kingdom (UK). A wide nose rhinoplasty is aimed at narrowing the nose.
Plastic surgery entails cutting, reshaping, or restructuring the nasal bones to achieve the desired shape. A wide nose rhinoplasty can help individuals enhance their facial features. But prior to getting this surgical procedure, you must be aware of what outcomes are possible for you.
What is wide-nose rhinoplasty?
A wide or broad nose job is a cosmetic surgery you may opt for if you want to reduce the width of your nose. People often get a wide nose rhinoplasty procedure for cosmetic purposes. However, for some, it can be a medical necessity as it can cause breathing difficulties.
In such cases, a wide nose can restrict the flow of air to the nasal passage. If prolonged, it can lead to chronic snoring, respiratory issues, and sleep apnea. Different types of broad nose rhinoplasty options can alleviate such difficulties and improve the overall appearance of the nose.
What are the different types of wide-nose rhinoplasty surgeries?
There are several options for wide-nose rhinoplasty. However, the exact one that’s suitable for each patient depends on their specific circumstances. Two types of plastic surgery are available for a wide nose.
Open or closed rhinoplasty
The surgical option that’s suitable for a patient, depends on different factors. Common examples of these factors include skin thickness, nose structure, current condition, and medical history. Let’s look at both options in detail.
1. An open wide-nose rhinoplasty is generally used when major restructuring or reshaping of the nose is needed. This option allows greater access, ensuring that the nasal bridge or bone structure can be adjusted as needed.
2. A closed broad-nose rhinoplasty is done only when minor adjustments are required. During this type of nose job, incisions are made inside the nostrils, which does not lead to any visible scarring.
Before deciding on a wide nose surgery procedure, Mr. Golchin has an initial consultation with all of his patients. During the consultation, patients are asked to express any concerns they have regarding their facial features, along with symptoms being experienced.
Mr. Golchin takes digital photographs at the consult stage and then, using computer imaging, he can analyse the structure of your nasal bridge and nasal bones. The results are then used to determine suitable wide-nose rhinoplasty options and realistic outcomes.
What is the surgical procedure for a wide or broad nose job?
The exact surgical procedure that can be used for a nose job varies based on the option Mr. Golchin has recommended. The procedure for a wide nose is divided into multiple stages, as mentioned below.
Consultation
As part of the consultation, Mr. Golchin will review patients medical history and conduct a physical examination to determine whether nasal surgery is suitable. During the examination, physical characteristics such as the size and thickness of the nasal bones and cartilage are considered as they impact the technical aspects of the nose job.
In addition, Mr. Golchin may require that patients visit their general physician for any blood work or x-rays. All preoperative instructions and necessary prescriptions are given before the surgery.
Receiving anaesthesia
Mr. Golchin performs a wide nose job as an inpatient process, and it may be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as chin surgery should the patient wish. In most cases, general anaesthesia is used to sedate the patients.
However, local anaesthesia combined with intravenous (IV) sedation may also be used if deemed sufficient. Once fully sedated, Mr. Golchin performs the actual nose job. The approach may vary among patients and is determined based on the factors mentioned above.
Open wide nose job
During an open rhinoplasty, external incisions are made under the nostrils. Once these incisions are made, Mr. Golchin uses specialised surgical equipment to separate the skin from the nasal bones and cartilage.
Afterwards, he begins to shape the nose to achieve the desired results. However, since this approach can leave visible scars, Mr. Golchin only uses this approach when abnormalities with the nose tip are evident.
Closed broad nose job
Where possible, Mr. Golchin prefers the closed rhinoplasty, also known as the internal approach, whenever possible. This approach does not lead to visible scarring and allows Mr. Golchin to better understand the reshaping procedure. Since the skin is not loosened up during the surgery, he can better sculpt the nose and achieve more accurate results. However, the extent of sculpting depends on your nasal anatomy.
Plastering
The entire nose job may take up to three hours. Once the rhinoplasty surgery is completed, Mr. Golchin applies a plaster inside the nose. The plaster protects the nose and helps it to maintain its new shape. It also helps prevent swelling after the operation. Soft nasal splints may also be applied to the nostrils to straighten the septum.
How long is the bulbous nose job recovery process?
For most patients, the recovery process can take around one to two weeks. However, this can vary based on individual circumstances. After getting a wide nose job, patients should avoid participating in intense physical activities for up to 6 weeks. During this recovery period, it’s common for individuals to experience symptoms such as bruising or swelling around the eyes and the nose.
Final thoughts
Getting a rhinoplasty has become increasingly common in the UK. This cosmetic procedure can help individuals enhance their facial features and alleviate medical difficulties. When it comes to fixing a broad nose, you have two options: an open or closed rhinoplasty.
The one that’s right for you depends on your physical characteristics, such as your nasal structure, and also on your medical history and current condition. Contact us now to learn more about which option is suitable for you.
